We have blogged here about former Chester baseball coach Bill Watts. The field has finally been named for him, a sign erected Thursday night.
We brought you the story in February of the two young men who integrated Dixie Youth baseball on Coach Bill's teams, and we've covered other honors for him, since his death last year.
We were there for this event, and you can find it online here.
By itself, it's a touching story from Sports Editor Travis Jenkins, but most readers won't know to be as impressed as they should, as impressed as I am.
Travis went and covered it and Legion ball and a Lewisville star signing, and some other things, all on Thursday, after we got the paper out.
He stayed up til 2 a.m. Friday working on stuff, but couldn't finish it all. It wasn't going in print, so he didn't have to push himself for the Internet. No one else bothered to cover it.
But he pushed himself for other reasons. And he came into the office Friday afternoon and finished the story on the field being named for Coach Watts, over the objections of the ladies on our staff. For the record, I did NOT call him nor did I require him to come to work and finish it up, even though I wanted it for our Web site.
For the same reasons as the ladies, I wanted Travis in the office only if he wanted to be there.
Because I also thought the ladies would probably hurt me if I called him in, I did not.
But he's dedicated to getting as much of the news out as possible.
Travis is getting married Saturday to a wonderful young lady. That obviously means he's got a rehearsal dinner on Friday.
But, like I said, he's dedicated to the story. He came in, finished it up, and we got it out on the web.
I hope our readers appreciate the extra effort he is willing to give.
He's got a couple of things done in advance for his honeymoon next week, but we are going to be short a person. Bear with us.
But having his kind of dedication makes a week off for honeymoon a bit easier to bear.
Wish him luck, as his co-workers do.
